Kabardian gardeners are planning to fill up the Russian shelves with domestic apples

Gardeners in Kabardino-Balkaria decided to deal seriously with the dominance of foreign apples in Russia. By the most humble data, the share of imported fruit at present is about 80%.

According to the experience of farmers of the southern republic, the cost of setting up, and growing gardens on one hectare of land is approximately 1.5 million rubles, and the harvest from this area brings 50-80 tons of fruit. It is sufficient to pay for all the investments in the second year.

Let us recall that in the last four years, there has been laid about a thousand acres of apple trees in Kabardino-Balkaria, from which growers have collected 72,000 tons of fruit. Harvest of this size completely satisfies the needs of the republic. But in the future farmers plan to increase the area of gardens to 20 hectares and to enter the markets of the neighboring regions of Russia.

European growers of apples and pears are worried by competition with Poland

Almost all European gardeners admit that the biggest competition threat for them comes from Poland, which has an important advantage: low prices for apples and pears. Besides, the harvest of this year exceeds all the previous indices, as well as production volumes in other countries.

The Polish growers do not forget about the quality either, improving it annually. However, the European manufacturers do not despair, as serious competition is a normal state of a healthy market. For example, apples and pears from Holland are very popular in the inner market of the country, as well as in Belgium and in Germany. But the Eastern market is often closed for them because they find it difficult to implement the expensive production among the people with lower income then Europeans’.

France: Apple&pear production down

The production of apples and pears in France has decreased compared to last year, mostly because of a smaller harvest. This according to the French ministry of agriculture.

Late September the apple supply was 44% lower than in September 2012. According to estimates the production of apples is down 24%. Prognosfruit states it’s a 9% drop compared to the European 2011 average. With supplies running low, prices are markedly higher. At the start of the season, prices already rose with 21% compared to the 2007-2011 average. By September the increase was 23% higher. Pears went through a similar movement, with a 34% drop in production.

The market for top fruit was stable for quite a while, but in August the supply soared. A big chunk of the surplus has been shipped to Russia, Germany and Scandinavia. Despite a relatively small crop, prices remained more or less the same. Now, with the current production shortage, prices went up with 33% compared to the 5-year average.

Russia is ramping up the production of apple juice concentrate

According to Rosstat, in the first 9 months of 2012 Russia produced 60.8 thousand tonnes of apple juice concentrate, which is 28% higher than the same period of last year when only 47.2 thousand tons were produced.

Thus, in 2011 the production of apple juice concentrate increased by 13% compared with 2010 and amounted to 66.1 thousand tons. Despite the increase in domestic production, Russia also increased imports of apple juice concentrate. So far, for the first 9 months of 2012, 92.1 thousand tons of concentrate were imported, which is 13% more than in the same period of last year.

Apples from Poland are getting more expensive in Russia

Growth of prices for Polish apples has been registered in Russia. Today, apples from Poland are offered at wholesale prices equal to 24-26 rub/kg (0,59-0,64 €/kg), which is almost 15% higher than at the beginning of last week. Wholesale companies report that the price increase is initiated by manufacturers from Poland, who are now holding back the sales of winter varieties of high-quality apples.

At the same time, the market participants believe that the positive trend in prices may increase because in addition to Polish farmers the local producers also hold back the prices. The Russian farms are not ready to make the apple cheaper than 22-25 rub/kg (0,54-0,62 € /kg). Lower priced sales are mainly performed by the farmers who have no place to store the apples or are in great need of funding.

Half of the apple yield in Russia is processed

More than 50% of the total yield of apples in Russia is processed. According to the  company “APK-Inform: Vegetables and Fruits”, during the last two years Russian companies stocked at least 700-750 thousand tons of apples. The experts note that over the past 4 years the volume of apples processing increased by almost 35%, reflecting primarily an increase in consumption of apple juice in the country. Another proof that Russians use more apple juice, is the positive dynamics of apple concentrate imports, while reducing exports.

Back in 2008, the volume of apple concentrate imports in Russia was only 67 thousand tons, while Russian companies produced no more than 500 thousand tons of own material. In 2011, imports of concentrate raised up to 94 thousand tons, while the amount of apples’ processing increased up to 750 thousand tons. Russian exports of concentrate decreased by almost 1.5 times for the last 4 years. The experts of “APK-Inform: Vegetables and Fruits” believe that due to a good apple harvest and relatively high prices the Russian companies will process a record volume of 855 thousand tons of apples.

Apple market is full with autumn apples

Producers from the southern regions of the Russian Federation have started to sell winter apples at extremely low prices. The reason for this is the surplus of autumn apples in the market, both of local and imported origin.
The prices are not even close to the autumn prices. Having lost the benefit of attractive prices, the winter apple sellers are not likely to succeed.
Russian farmers cannot raise the prices for apples even to the level of 30 Rubles per kilogram. Producers from Moldova suggest the price of 18-20 Rubles per kilogram, suppliers from Poland – 22-27 Rubles.

Apple prices in Russia going down

Russian prices for apples fell 10-15% last week. Farmers sold high-quality Autumn apples at 17-20 RUB/kg, but last week no deals exceeding 15 RUB/kg have been made.

In comparison, at the end of September 2011, apples were sold at 15-22 RUB/kg, prices for high-quality apples even reaching 25 RUB/kg. This year farmers are ready to sell at 10-12 RUB/kg, but it does not influence the tempo of trading.

The negative price tendency in the market is due to the supply continuously exceeding the demand for apples. Besides huge amounts of apples from local producers, the market is full of relatively cheap apples from Moldova.

During 2012 new farming areas started to produce crops in a big way. As a result of increased average productivity in the country, according to estimates of APK-inform: 1.6 million tons of apples will be collected this year, which is going to be a record for the last 5 years.
