Russia imports more apples from Moldavia and Serbia

Russia imported 1.15 million tonnes of apples in 2011. That’s slightly more (+0.4%) than in 2010. Poland remains the most important supplier with around 283,000 tonnes (-18%). This is despite Poland supplying less apples in 2011 than in the two especially successful years before. Moldavia is becoming a more important supplier. In 2011 the country supplied 174,000 tonnes of apples to Russia (+14%). Five years ago this number was still around 1000 tonnes. Imports from China (150,600 tonnes, -3%) have been declining since the peak in 2008 (241.550 tonnes).

The number of deliveries from Serbia has increased significantly (90,700 tonnes, +45%). Argentina (60,150 tonnes, +102%) did well again, after the country only supplied small amounts of apples to Russia in the years 2009 and 2010. The countries from Central and South Europe supplied 222,100 tonnes (+3%) together. The small positive trend in the total import was due to the higher amount of deliveries since the beginning of the new harvest (+8.9%). In the first half of 2011 the number of imports was in a downward trend.

Ukraine may double apple exports in the current season

According to Fruit-Inform, in August and September 2011, the Russian Federation’s apple imports from Ukraine grew year-on-year.

As of October 2011, internal prices for apples are higher year-on-year in Ukraine. Such a fact is connected mainly with big producers not hurrying with sales of their produce. Practically all fresh apples harvested by them are stored. Moreover, Ukraine’s storage capacity significantly expanded in the past year. Farmers plan to start their main shipments in early December. Many of them expect to increase their exports to Russia 1.5-2 times year-on-year.

How the current season situation will favor Ukrainian producers’ plans? This and many other questions will be answered at the 8-th International Conference “Fruits & Vegetables of Ukraine – 2011. New Exporter”. The event will take place in conjunction with Fresh Produce Ukraine 2011 Fair which will be held at IEC, the most up-to-date exhibition center of Ukraine in Kiev, from November 30 to December 2, 2011.

The conference’s third day will be fully devoted to the Trade Forum involving key Russian and Ukrainian retail chains, importers and wholesalers that will enable the participants to receive the unique information about the Eastern European fruit and vegetable sector.

Apple consumption sharply reduced in Russia

According to Fruit-Inform Project’s estimates, in the season 2010/11 the fresh apple consumption in the Russian Federation was the lowest over last 3 seasons. This is caused by high apple prices in the world and sharp decrease of the domestic apple production in Russia.

“Reduction of the fresh apple consumption amounted to 12% in the season 2010/11. However, the value of Russia’s apple market increased by almost 40% that is connected with more than 50% growth of apple prices in the country”, Tetiana Getman, Head of Fruit-Inform Project, says. “Moreover, the share of domestic apples in the Russian market was the lowest over last 5 years”.

Ukraine is among five largest importers of apples in the world

According to “Fruit-Inform” estimations, Ukraine entered a group of five largest apple importers in the world. Within the season 2009/10 Ukraine was supplied with about 265,000 tones of apples, while experts assume the real import volumes to be even more. Imports kept on growing, notwithstanding dynamic growth of domestic production and increase of share of intensive high-yielding gardens in the area structure.

At the same time Ukraine intensified apple exports. As to results of the season 2009/10, Ukraine entered a group of 20 largest exporters of apples in the world and took 7-8-th places in Europe concerning exports of this category.
