Russian AJC manufacturers face problems with sales

The Russian AJC (apple juice concentrate) market situation is rather difficult for domestic manufacturers. Abundant supply of domestic AJC and lack of sales channels are the main problems faced by them. In addition, AJC imports (mainly from China, Ukraine, Uzbekistan and Iran) are rather high.

At the same time, processors rarely revise their prices. The price decrease is registered in isolated cases and does not improve the situation.

For the present, prices vary between at 1.10-1.20 euro/kg.

Half of the apple yield in Russia is processed

More than 50% of the total yield of apples in Russia is processed. According to the  company “APK-Inform: Vegetables and Fruits”, during the last two years Russian companies stocked at least 700-750 thousand tons of apples. The experts note that over the past 4 years the volume of apples processing increased by almost 35%, reflecting primarily an increase in consumption of apple juice in the country. Another proof that Russians use more apple juice, is the positive dynamics of apple concentrate imports, while reducing exports.

Back in 2008, the volume of apple concentrate imports in Russia was only 67 thousand tons, while Russian companies produced no more than 500 thousand tons of own material. In 2011, imports of concentrate raised up to 94 thousand tons, while the amount of apples’ processing increased up to 750 thousand tons. Russian exports of concentrate decreased by almost 1.5 times for the last 4 years. The experts of “APK-Inform: Vegetables and Fruits” believe that due to a good apple harvest and relatively high prices the Russian companies will process a record volume of 855 thousand tons of apples.

Only 25% of Russian Apple Juice is Produced from Domestic Apples

The average Russian consumes about 20 liters of juice annually; 10 years ago it was only 5 liters. According to the Russian union of juice producers the volume of domestic fresh produce is far from being sufficient for juice production. There are not even enough apples, which are traditionally grown and consumed in huge amounts. As a result only 25% of juice is produced using domestic fruit and vegetables. The rest is based on foreign concentrates. It is only the federal target programme which could help to support industrial horticulture. Apple gardens should be enlarged at least fourfold, and technology needs modernization.
