Apples from Poland are getting more expensive in Russia

Growth of prices for Polish apples has been registered in Russia. Today, apples from Poland are offered at wholesale prices equal to 24-26 rub/kg (0,59-0,64 €/kg), which is almost 15% higher than at the beginning of last week. Wholesale companies report that the price increase is initiated by manufacturers from Poland, who are now holding back the sales of winter varieties of high-quality apples.

At the same time, the market participants believe that the positive trend in prices may increase because in addition to Polish farmers the local producers also hold back the prices. The Russian farms are not ready to make the apple cheaper than 22-25 rub/kg (0,54-0,62 € /kg). Lower priced sales are mainly performed by the farmers who have no place to store the apples or are in great need of funding.

Half of the apple yield in Russia is processed

More than 50% of the total yield of apples in Russia is processed. According to the  company “APK-Inform: Vegetables and Fruits”, during the last two years Russian companies stocked at least 700-750 thousand tons of apples. The experts note that over the past 4 years the volume of apples processing increased by almost 35%, reflecting primarily an increase in consumption of apple juice in the country. Another proof that Russians use more apple juice, is the positive dynamics of apple concentrate imports, while reducing exports.

Back in 2008, the volume of apple concentrate imports in Russia was only 67 thousand tons, while Russian companies produced no more than 500 thousand tons of own material. In 2011, imports of concentrate raised up to 94 thousand tons, while the amount of apples’ processing increased up to 750 thousand tons. Russian exports of concentrate decreased by almost 1.5 times for the last 4 years. The experts of “APK-Inform: Vegetables and Fruits” believe that due to a good apple harvest and relatively high prices the Russian companies will process a record volume of 855 thousand tons of apples.

Apple market is full with autumn apples

Producers from the southern regions of the Russian Federation have started to sell winter apples at extremely low prices. The reason for this is the surplus of autumn apples in the market, both of local and imported origin.
The prices are not even close to the autumn prices. Having lost the benefit of attractive prices, the winter apple sellers are not likely to succeed.
Russian farmers cannot raise the prices for apples even to the level of 30 Rubles per kilogram. Producers from Moldova suggest the price of 18-20 Rubles per kilogram, suppliers from Poland – 22-27 Rubles.

Russians began to spend more money again

According to the research of analytical company”Romir”, Russians’ spending at food and consumer goods increased by 3% in September 2012 compared to August 2012 and returned to the level of April 2012 .

Compared to September of the last year, expenditures increased by 13% in nominal terms, that is twice more than inflation rate.

In August 2012, consumer spending began to go up and the same tendency could be observed in September 2012.

However, it is too early to speak of changing of the situation in the country – October data should be studied to draw some conclusion.

Analysts blame the seasonal surge in consumer activity, which resulted in the prices growth. In September, consumer spending usually grow because of a new school year.

According to some analysts, the Russians become freer from the fear of possible economic crises, and they began to spend more money again despite the fact that, as shown by other polls, a significant part of the population do not have enough money and had to economize on food and cut daily expenses.
