Decline in pear imports and production

According to the industry experts, approximately 120 thousand tons of pears have been exported to Russia in the current season. The Russian Federal State Statistics Service (Rosstat), says this shows a decrease of 13% compared to last year.

The main importers of pears into the country remain Poland, the Netherlands and Belgium. It should be recalled that, in 2012, the fruit production was reduced by one third on average in these countries, thus, the decrease in supply to Russia is quite natural.

The production of pears in Russia itself is decreasing. According to the information provided by the Foreign Agricultural Service (FAS) of the United States, the fruit harvest in the country was only 110 000 tons – 21 percent less than last year.

Kabardian gardeners are planning to fill up the Russian shelves with domestic apples

Gardeners in Kabardino-Balkaria decided to deal seriously with the dominance of foreign apples in Russia. By the most humble data, the share of imported fruit at present is about 80%.

According to the experience of farmers of the southern republic, the cost of setting up, and growing gardens on one hectare of land is approximately 1.5 million rubles, and the harvest from this area brings 50-80 tons of fruit. It is sufficient to pay for all the investments in the second year.

Let us recall that in the last four years, there has been laid about a thousand acres of apple trees in Kabardino-Balkaria, from which growers have collected 72,000 tons of fruit. Harvest of this size completely satisfies the needs of the republic. But in the future farmers plan to increase the area of gardens to 20 hectares and to enter the markets of the neighboring regions of Russia.

Half of the apple yield in Russia is processed

More than 50% of the total yield of apples in Russia is processed. According to the  company “APK-Inform: Vegetables and Fruits”, during the last two years Russian companies stocked at least 700-750 thousand tons of apples. The experts note that over the past 4 years the volume of apples processing increased by almost 35%, reflecting primarily an increase in consumption of apple juice in the country. Another proof that Russians use more apple juice, is the positive dynamics of apple concentrate imports, while reducing exports.

Back in 2008, the volume of apple concentrate imports in Russia was only 67 thousand tons, while Russian companies produced no more than 500 thousand tons of own material. In 2011, imports of concentrate raised up to 94 thousand tons, while the amount of apples’ processing increased up to 750 thousand tons. Russian exports of concentrate decreased by almost 1.5 times for the last 4 years. The experts of “APK-Inform: Vegetables and Fruits” believe that due to a good apple harvest and relatively high prices the Russian companies will process a record volume of 855 thousand tons of apples.

Apple market is full with autumn apples

Producers from the southern regions of the Russian Federation have started to sell winter apples at extremely low prices. The reason for this is the surplus of autumn apples in the market, both of local and imported origin.
The prices are not even close to the autumn prices. Having lost the benefit of attractive prices, the winter apple sellers are not likely to succeed.
Russian farmers cannot raise the prices for apples even to the level of 30 Rubles per kilogram. Producers from Moldova suggest the price of 18-20 Rubles per kilogram, suppliers from Poland – 22-27 Rubles.
